| Notes |
- Aged 82 Yr. 9 Mo.
Silas' parents are Zachariah and Polly "Mary" (Acton) Nowlin. Silas was married twice: First to Elenor Cooper Blasdel on 03 Jun 1835, from which marriage 7 children were born. Then to Martha Jane Hargitt on 24 Sep 1849, from which marriage 9 children were born.
Silas worked by the month at flatboating for some years and in this way made his start in the business world. He would build a barge from lumber he cut, then fill it with wheat he grew, then float the barge down the river to New Orleans where he would sell both the grain and the lumber; then he would walk back to IN. It was on one of his return trips that his son Jonathan Blasdel was born. In 1835 he bought 140 acres of land and the following year he acquired 80 more. Eventually, he owned about 800 acres in Dearborn County, IN, besides a considerable tract in IL. He continued his river traffic until 1849, then devoted his time and attention to farming and stock raising. Silas and Elenor had seven children, four of whom were living in 1885. At the marriage of each of his children, he gave them some farm land in IN, OH, IL and MO. He lost a lot of money by going on notes for friends and he asked each of his children to refuse to sign a note for anyone.
Silas Emerson Nowlin is buried in the Cambridge (a/k/a Pella) Cemetery, near Guliford, Dearborn County, IN.
Discrepancy: His tombstone indicates that he died on 22 Mar 1891 at the age of 82 years and 9 months which would mean that his date of birth was 22 Jun 1808. His obituary indicates that he died on 26 Mar 1891. The 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880 US Census records strongly suggest that he was born in 1809 rather than 1808. Family tradition suggests that he was born in 1809.
