Funeral services celebrating the life of Katherine Parnell Nix, 95, will be held at Lakewood Funeral Home Chapel on Clinton Blvd. in Jackson, MS, on Saturday, June 18, at 11 a.m. Officiating will be Rev. Donnie Guy, a Gulfport evangelist and her former pastor at Van Winkle Baptist Church. Visitation is scheduled from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 17, at Lakewood. She will be laid to rest in Lakewood Cemetery beside her husband and life partner of 48 years, Frank Nix, who preceded her in death in October 1983.

Teresa Katherine Parnell was the youngest of five children born to Zachary B. and Winnie B. Parnell of rural Brookhaven, MS, on September 5, 1915. "Miss Katherine" had been a resident of the Jackson-area since December 1946. She went home to be with her Lord at 1:18 a.m. Thursday in Brandon, MS, at the home of her primary care-giver and daughter, Patricia Bounds.

For the last five years of her life, Mrs. Nix was partially incapacitated by a hip-joint replacement that kept her from active participation in her church, First Baptist of Pearl, MS. However, for more than three decades prior to that, she and her family were active members of Van Winkle Baptist Church where she sang in the choir.

Miss Katherine loved to spend her spare time listening to gospel music, watching her favorite television preachers, quilting, crocheting, and fishing (not necessarily in that order).

Mrs. Nix was preceded in death by her parents; all nine of her siblings (including four half brothers and sisters); her husband; grandson Jeffrey Kent Nix; son-in-law Robert C. Bounds, and great-grandson Russell Ian Nix. She is survived by her three children - Pat Bounds, Curt Nix (Karen), and Paul Nix (Danelle); nine grandchildren - Teresa Borne, Bobby Bounds, Judy Hunter (Roy), Shelli Bounds, Cindi Nix, Rus Nix (Dory), Memory Kohl (Tom), Stephen Nix, Barry Nix (Robyn), and Kyle Kleinpoppen; great-grandchildren - Matthew Bounds (Erica), Foster Borne, Shelby Hunter, Ian Hunter, Jan Reeves (Lee), Anna Jefcoat, Erik Nix, Angie Nix, Evan Nix, Caroline Kohl, Noah Nix, and Presley Nix.

Pall bearers are Bobby Bounds, Roy Hunter, Rus Nix, Barry Nix, Matthew Bounds, and Foster Borne.

The family wishes to thank Odessey Hospice and its staff for the love and Christ-like kindness they showed Miss Katherine and her family during her final days.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Gideons International for the purchase of memorial bibles in her name, or to the Billy Graham Association.
