  • Notes
    • When Eugene M. Saunders was born about 1860, in Monroe County, Mississippi, his father, John, was 37 and his mother, Cornelia, was 22. His father was a prominent artist whose exant work includes "Arabian Girl"
"Madonna" and a self portrait. When he was about 7 years old, his family moved to Tennessee to live among some other family members. His parents contracted Yellow Fever and when he was 8 years old both parents died within a week of each other. He went back to Mississippi (where most of his family lived) and was living with his uncle, James Caswell Saunders and I presume he lived with him until adulthood. He married Marion Elizabeth Speirs in 1882 in Mississippi. They moved to Missouri where their two children were born, but by his late 20s they family lived in New York City where he was initially a clerk and then a bookkeeper and finally an accountant. He died on July 9, 1927, in Queens, New York, at the age of 67.
