- Eugene M. "Chick" Reeves, 85, of Golinda, passed away Friday, May 31, 2013, at his residence after a brief illness. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Tuesday, June 4, at First Baptist Church Golinda with the Rev. Morgan Woodard will be officiating. Burial to follow at Waco Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m., Monday, June 3, at Pecan Grove Funeral Home.
Chick was born in Whitewright, Texas, to the late John L. Reeves and Dale McGaughey Reeves, and was the oldest of four sons. He attended school in Whitewright, graduating in 1945. Soon after graduation, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and was stationed in San Diego, Calif. He was honorably discharged and soon began a career at the VA Hospital in McKinney, Texas. This is where he met a cute young nurse named Rachel Betterton, and they married on Oct. 28, 1950. He worked for the VA Medical Centers in McKinney and Waco for 36 years and retired in 1982. Chick had many interests including gardening, bee keeping, raising goats, shopping and selling at flea markets, and raising chickens (which earned him the nickname Chick).
Preceding him in death was a daughter, Kay Carter; and a brother, David Reeves.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Rachel; daughters, Ann Bailey, of Lorena, Mary Whitaker and husband, Cliff, of Robinson, and Kelly Reeves, of Lago Vista, Texas; sons-in-law, Robert Carter and Edward Bailey; six grandsons; two granddaughters; eight great-grandchildren; brothers, James Reeves and wife, Liza, and John Dale Reeves and wife, Aileen; sister-in-law, Kathleen Reeves; and numerous nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
