Pvt. John William Deer (b. Barnwell County, SC, 1820-d. Pike County, MS, 1895), Co. C ("Thomas' Company," raised in Pike County, MS), Garland's Battalion MS Cavalry. Enlisted Oct. 16, 1862, at Summit, Pike County, MS, at age 42. This unit was enlarged to become the 14th Confederate Cavalry on Sept. 14, 1863. Pvt. Deer served in Co. C (still "Thomas' Company") of this regiment. On March 3, 1865, the 38th MS Infantry (Mounted), the 14th Confederate Cavalry, and the 3rd MS Cavalry were consolidated into the 38th, 14th, and 3rd Consolidated MS Cavalry. Pvt. Deer does not have a war's-end parole with this consolidated unit. Buried in the Manning Cemetery, 5 miles S of Sartinville (no better directions available), Walthall County, MS, with a private marker.
