- Smith Nelson Vosseller, the subject of this sketch was born in Montgomery county, New York, August the 7th 1834, and departed this life February 10, 1920 being aged 85 years, 6 months and 3 days. He was the eldest of a family of eleven children, four of whom survive, one brother of Garnet, Kan., and three sisters who reside in the state of New York.
On Novetnber 25, 1868, Smith Nelson Vosseller was united in marriage, to Emma F. Raynor of Cayuga County. In 1869, this couple moved to Iowa and settled on farms near Plainfield, where they lived until 1889, when they moved to Plainfield, where they have since made their home. To this union were born four daughters, who, survive him, Della M. Taylor, of Plainfield; Ollie M. Boyd of Horton; Lulu B. Vosseller of Oakdale, Iowa; and Jessie A. Stanley of Charles City.
He was a soldier in the Civil war of these United States and had suffered the affliction of the loss of his left lower limb since the year 1872.
He was a devoted husband and a loving father and his character is reflected in his surviving family.
Funeral services were held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. F. R. Boyd in Horton at 2:00 o'clock on the afternoon of February 13th, 1920, where Mr. Vosseller had died; Rev. Arthur Woods, of the Baptist church in Horton being the officiating clergyman. Interment of the remains was made in the Willow Grove Cemetery, in Plainfield, in the locality of which Mr. Vosseller has lived all these years. Only immediate relatives and friends were in attendance at the funeral, and many floral offerings marked the passing of his long life.
