Wednesday, July 27.--The Rochester Democrat and Chronicle this morning says: Made temporarily insane by suffering from cancer of the stomach, Austin S. Brooks, 72 years of age, pulled a sheet over his head and turned on the gas in his room at No. 435 Main Street East, between 4 and 6 o'clock yesterday morning. When members of his family entered the room they found it full of gas and Brooks dead upon the bed. Brooks, who was a harness maker, had suffered for several years from cancer. Of late be had been despondent and members of the family remained with him yesterday morning until 4 o'clock, when he seemed to be resting comfortably. Coroner Kleindienst made investigation and gave a certificate of death by suicide while temporarily insane.
Austin S. Brooks formerly resided in this city and was in the harness and saddlery business. He was prominent in volunteer fireman affairs and in the early 70's was foreman of Logan Hook and Ladder company No. 1.
