  It is believed that Zachariah Nowlin was born in Virginia around 1775 to James and Bethaniah (Jones) Nowlin. He married Polly "Mary" Elizabeth Acton on 30 Dec 1805 in Garrard County, Kentucky. Zachariah moved his family to Miller Township, Dearborn County, Indiana in approximately 1816. He and Polly had six children: Jeremiah Nowlin (m. Permelia Blasdel); Silas Emerson Nowlin (m1. Elenor Cooper Blasdel, m2. Martha Jane Hargitt); Elizabeth "Betty" Nowlin (m. Hiram Leaming); Delilah Nowlin (m. Joseph Groff); Henry Nowlin (m. Mary Ann Hargitt); and William Nowlin (m. Mary Catherine Osgood). Some researchers have concluded that Zachariah's wife's name was Mary Elizabeth (Pride) Nowlin; however, this writer is of the opinion that the surname of Pride is incorrect for the following reasons: (1) there is a marriage certificate in Garrard County, Kentucky referencing a marriage between Zachariah Nowlin and Polly Acton which occurred on 30 Dec 1805; (2) there were no Pride families listed in either the 1800 or the 1810 Federal Census records for Garrard County, Kentucky, but several Acton families; (3) the names of Polly and Mary were interchangable at that point in history; (4) no Nowlin researcher has produced a marriage license evidencing a marriage between Zachariah Nowlin and Mary Pride; (5) the first known publication of Mary Pride being the wife of Zachariah Nowlin occurs in an 1885 county history for Dearborn County, Indiana; i.e., some 43 years after her death. It is generally known that county history books published at this time in history were for-profit businesses; it has been my experience that the biographies submitted to the county history publishers contain many errors and are, at best, a secondary source of genealogical evidence. Zachariah Nowlin is this contributor's ggg-grandfather.
