Helene S. Catalano, of Cheektowaga, an executive assistant at Hospice Buffalo and the Salvation Army Buffalo Citadel Corps, died May 20 in Hospice Buffalo, Cheektowaga, two months after she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. She was 68.

Born Helene Sue Cornell in Olean, the youngest of four children, she was a 1968 graduate of Hinsdale High School and earned an associate’s degree from Bryant and Stratton Business Institute.

She began her career in the office at the Salvation Army in Buffalo and was administrative assistant to several corps officers.

Mrs. Catalano joined Hospice Buffalo in 1991 and, as a Certified Administrative Professional Organizational Management (CAP-OM), she served for 25 years under four chief executive officers. She was active in many hospice fundraising activities.

After she retired in 2016, she again served at the Salvation Army as a project specialist and SNAP worker, advising people on heating and food benefits. She was a member and leader of the Salvation Army’s Ladies Home League.

She was named Secretary of the Year in 1998 by the Buffalo Chapter of Professional Secretaries International, which now is the International Association of Administrative Professionals. She was a board member of the Buffalo Chapter of PSI and chaired its membership committee.

She also was active in Alcoholics Anonymous and was a mentor to many members.

Survivors include her husband of 45 years, Robert J., a financial adviser; two daughters, Anna Rauvenpoor and Sara L. Connolly; two sons, Robert Jr. and Matthew; a sister, Donna Williamson; and six grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 30, in St. Peter’s United Church of Christ, 1475 Orchard Park Road, West Seneca.
