- The Rev. Otto A. Borchelt, 89, of Springfield died at 11:34 p.m. Saturday at Villa Healthcare East, Sherman. He was born May 11, 1903, in St. Peter, the son of August and Louise Bahde Borchelt. He married Lucinda D. Neuendorf in 1926. Preceding him in death were a great-grandchild; a brother; and two sisters.
The Rev. Borchelt was a minister and chaplain for Lutheran Church Missouri Synod. He entered Concordia College, Fort Wayne, Ind., in 1917. He attended Concordia College from 1917-1920. In 1920 he entered Concordia Seminary in Springfield, graduating in 1926. He first served as a missionary to Mount Olive, San Antonio, Texas, from 1926-1927. From 1927-1944 he served St. Lukes in Okawville, and in the years 1945-1954 was pastor of St. Paul's in Manito. In the fall of 1954 he accepted a call from Central Illinois District of the Missouri Synod as chaplain of both Lincoln State School and Jacksonville State Hospital.
From 1958 to his retirement in 1972, the Rev. Borchelt served Jacksonville State Hospital, and later exclusively while retired. He moved to Decatur, where he served as visitation pastor to the elderly and shut-ins at St.
John's Lutheran Church.
A resident of Springfield since 1984, the Rev. Borchelt was a member of Concordia Lutheran Church and the Lutheran Laymen's League.
Surviving are his wife, Lucinda D.; three daughters; a son; 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Services will be at Concordia Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Charles Olander and Dr. Lewis Niemoeller officiating. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Cemetery.
