Rites Wednesday For Arthur Agan, Former Postmaster Local Resident Was Well Known Baseball Player In Early Years Fayetteville--Funeral services for Arthur C. Agan, who died Sunday after a long illness were held Wednesday afternoon at his late home in South Manlius street. Rev. Roy L. Smith, pastor of Fayetteville Methodist church, officiated and burial was made in Fayetteville cemetery.

Mr. Agan was born in this village 77 years ago, a son of the late Hiram and Eliza Agan, and had always resided here. In his young manhood he was a well known baseball player in Eastern leagues and was a former postmaster at the local office for 16 years. Before illness forced him to retire, he was superintendent of the Fayetteville cemetery.

Mr. Agan began his baseball career on the sand lots of this village, being hired by the late Tobias (Sandy) Griffin and later by George Kantz. He will be remembered as a pitcher for the Old Syracuse Stars. He also pitched for Olean, Bradford and other teams in the Eastern League.

With Bert Kinney of Truxton, Mr. Agan was instrumental in starting the late John McGraw, former big league star and manager of the New York Giants, on his baseball career. Mr. Agan is mentioned in McGraw's book on the national game and he was one of the first curve ball pitchers in the game and the first man to perfect an over-hand drop ball.

Surviving are two sons, Hiram C. Agan; of North Syracuse, and Franklyn Agan, who is with the armed forces in Berlin, Germany; one grandson, Hiram C. Agan, Jr., one nephew, Arthur W. Agan, of Syracuse; three nieces, Mrs. Herbert Cornett and Mrs. John Wells of this village, and Mrs. Hannah Kuhry, of Syracuse; a brother-in-law, Prof. William J. Gorse, of Syracuse.
