- He was born in Houston Co. Georgia, the son of John Gunter and Permelia Willis. During the Civil War, he enlisted in Co.F 39th Ala. Infantry. Bryant S. Howell, his step sister Nancy Brooks Howell's husband served alongside him. After the war, he and his wife, Amanda Armstrong moved with their children and his mother to Montgomery from Eufaula after 1880. His date of death is recorded in the cemetery records.
