Funeral services for Kenneth Dale Howie, 76, were held Friday, Aug 22, 1997 at the First Presbyterian Church, Monticello with burial in Oakwood Cemetery. The Rev. Al Polito officiated at the services. A Masonic Service, conducted by Burns Lodge, was held at the Goettsch Funeral Home, Monticello on Thursday evening, Aug 21.
Kenneth Howie died Tuesday, Aug. 19, 1997 at St. Luke's Hospital, Cedar Rapids, following a prolonged battle with cancer. He was born Oct 3, 1920 at John McDonald Hospital, Monticello, the son of Robert and Alice Deischer Howie. He graduated from the Monticello High School in 1939 and later attended Lenox College in Hopkinton. He married Margaret Siebels on Oct 6, 1943 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Anamosa. They farmed the Howie family Century Farm now operated by his son.
Howie was a leader in both agriculture and community organizations, serving on the Jones County Board of Education, Monticello School Board, I.D.O.T. Planning Committee, Farmers Home Administration Board and was a Federal Land Bank Director, the Soil Conservation Board, ASCS Extension Council, the Farm Service Board, the Election Board, Township Trustee, and the Agriculture Property Rights Association. He had been an Elder in the First Presbyterian Church, Worshipful Master of Burns Lodge, Worthy Patron of Eastern Star, and the Lions Club.
Surviving are his wife, Margaret; a daughter, Diana (Daniel) Stadtmueller, and a son Michael (Cheryl) Howie, all of Monticello; two grandchildren, Deborah Stadtmueller Vince and her husband, Barry of Long Beach, Calif., Darren Stadtmueller, Monticello; a brother, Donald (Lucille) Howie of Rockville, MD, two sisters, Ruth (John) Morris of Washington, Janet Motsinger of Monticello, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Barbara, and a brother, Robert.
A memorial fund has been established or a contribution can be made in his memory to the American Cancer Society

Anna Berlin
The funeral of Anna C. Berlin, 94, Monticello, will be Wednesday (today), Oct. 24, at St. -Matthew's Lutheran church, Monticello, 10:30 a.m. with burial in Oakwood cemetery. Rev. Harvey O. Gilbertson will officiate at the services. Mrs. Berlin died Oct. 22 at the Monticello Senior Home. She was born Nov. 20, 1884, near Langworthy, the daughter of John and Margareta Oltmann. She received her education in the rural schools of Jones County. As a young woman, she worked as a maid in several prominent homes in Monticello. On Jan. 16, 1908, she married Fred L. Berlin. The couple moved to a farm northeast of Monticello in 1914. Mr. Berlin died Aug. 8, 1946, and Mrs. Berlin moved back to her home in Monticello two years later. She lived there until Aug. 19, 1970, when she entered the Senior Home. She was a life-long member of St. Matthew's Lutheran church, Monticello. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by two daughters, four brothers, and three sisters. She is survived by one grandson, three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Casket bearers for the services will be Larry Lamont, Junior Kenny, D. Wayne Thompson, Wilfred Kleitsch, Larry Howie, William Howie. Honorary casket bearers will be: Henry Adams, Harold Egger, Kenneth Tuetken, Fredrick Rieniets, Lyle Behrends, Albert Fass.

We learned that Mr. John A. Stafford, who died at his residence some 12 miles from Covington, last Monday, was poisoned the day before (Sunday)at Enon Church in Washington Parish. The poisoned was administered to him in whiskey.
