BOWERMAN - In loving memory of our dear daughter, Margaret A. Bowerman, who passed away August 18, 1917.
Sad and sudden was the call,
For my dear daughter, loved by all;
We did not know that on that day,
That our dear daughter would be called
away.
Each day we miss her more and more;
God must have loved her and thought it
best,
To take her home to be at rest.

Mr. Grey was a member of Genoa Star Lodge of Odd Fellows and of Auburn Encampment. He was a past district deputy of the same order. Mr. Grey was born in Venice and practically all of his life was spent there. A brother Delmar Grey, was killed last year when he was struck by an automobile while walking along the highway in Genoa.

It is assumed that Nabby was buried in Cambridge Cemetery, Dearborn County, IN beside her husband, Thomas Townsend. Nabby and Thomas were married in 1812, presumably in Dearborn County, IN. Nabby is the daughter of Lieut. Jacob and Ruth (Morse) Blasdel. Nabby had a twin named Polly. Nabby is the sixth generation down from Ralph (or Ralf) Bleasdale (or Blaisdell) who arrived in America from England. Ralph, his wife Elizabeth (maiden name Parker) and their family landed at what is now Pemaquid Point, Maine on the ship Angel Gabriel on August 15, 1635. | Blasdel, Nabby (I263)

It is believed that Zachariah Nowlin was born in Virginia around 1775 to James and Bethaniah (Jones) Nowlin. He married Polly "Mary" Elizabeth Acton on 30 Dec 1805 in Garrard County, Kentucky. Zachariah moved his family to Miller Township, Dearborn County, Indiana in approximately 1816. He and Polly had six children: Jeremiah Nowlin (m. Permelia Blasdel); Silas Emerson Nowlin (m1. Elenor Cooper Blasdel, m2. Martha Jane Hargitt); Elizabeth "Betty" Nowlin (m. Hiram Leaming); Delilah Nowlin (m. Joseph Groff); Henry Nowlin (m. Mary Ann Hargitt); and William Nowlin (m. Mary Catherine Osgood). Some researchers have concluded that Zachariah's wife's name was Mary Elizabeth (Pride) Nowlin; however, this writer is of the opinion that the surname of Pride is incorrect for the following reasons: (1) there is a marriage certificate in Garrard County, Kentucky referencing a marriage between Zachariah Nowlin and Polly Acton which occurred on 30 Dec 1805; (2) there were no Pride families listed in either the 1800 or the 1810 Federal Census records for Garrard County, Kentucky, but several Acton families; (3) the names of Polly and Mary were interchangable at that point in history; (4) no Nowlin researcher has produced a marriage license evidencing a marriage between Zachariah Nowlin and Mary Pride; (5) the first known publication of Mary Pride being the wife of Zachariah Nowlin occurs in an 1885 county history for Dearborn County, Indiana; i.e., some 43 years after her death. It is generally known that county history books published at this time in history were for-profit businesses; it has been my experience that the biographies submitted to the county history publishers contain many errors and are, at best, a secondary source of genealogical evidence. Zachariah Nowlin is this contributor's ggg-grandfather. | Nowlin, Zachariah (I511)

Jacob resided in Amesbury, MA; Kingston, Brentwood, Tamworth, Eaton, Burton, NH; Columbia, OH; and Cambridge, IN. He was a Lieut. in the Revolutionary War where he served three enlistments and was paid a Warrant for land by the US Government. He sold 1,000 acres of land in New Hampshire, went by horse, oxen and by foot to the Allegheny River near Pittsburgh, PA, then by flat boat down the Ohio River to Marietta, Columbia and Cincinnati, OH. He stayed five years near the Great Miami River. In 1804 he bought Section 23 and 1/4 of Section 29 in Township 6 of Range 1 West, Indiana, three miles west of the Ohio line. He named the place Cambridge, now known as Pella or Pella Crossing. In 1805 at age 51 he began to clear his land. Usually a family could clear an acre a year. One of his first acts was to establish an Academy, a 20' x 24' timber house, believed to be the first college in the Indiana Territory. Lt. Jacob Blasdel was an experienced blacksmith, iron worker and millwright. He built a grist mill and saw mill, operated by power from Tanners Creek. He died in 1831 and left eight children and 45 grandchildren who survived him; he is buried in Cambridge Cemetery, Dearborn County, IN. His four sons, Enoch, Jacob, Jonathan and Elijah, and two of his daughters, Nabby and Sally, are buried in the same cemetery (Cambridge) where he is buried.

Grandma Main Dead
Two weeks ago on the 9th of January, Grandma Main celebrated the 80th anniversary of her birth. The occasion was a delightful one, attended by about fifty lady friends. At that time Grandma was at her best and moved among her guests lively and cheerfully, a characteristic of hers during her long life. Little did the guests think at that time, nor did the many friends of the dear old lady realize, that death was so soon to claim this one of our revered citizens.
On January 12th, the coldest day of the season, Mrs. Main went about her morning work as usual, but at noon when the young men boarding with her came home to dinner, they found her lying upon the floor where she had fallen, she having suffered a stroke of paralysis. The fires were out and the room cold. From that time until death she was unconscious part of the time and at no time was she able to articulate, making her wants known by motion. All that could be done availed nothing, and death claimed the life that had made the world better for four score years.
A year ago Mrs Main suffered several weeks’ sickness which made serious inroad on her iron constitution. Since then she had expressed herself ready to pass to the life beyond and it was her desire that when the end came it would not be preceded by a long siege of illness. Hers was a busy life. Her household affairs were always in readiness and when the end came on Saturday morning, January 20, she too was ready to answer the Master’s call and hear the welcome words, “Well done good and faithful servant.”
While we mourn her death, her many acts of kindness will ever live in the memory of the many friends left behind.
Mary Veline Brooks Main was born in Moravia, New York, January 9th, 1831 and married October 5, 1848 to William Main. To this union three children were born, one dying in infancy. The family moved to Dickey County in 1884, locating at Yorktown, and came to Ellendale in 1896. Mr. Main died in 1902. Mrs. Main leaves to mourn her death one sone, Edward H. Main, of Topeka, Kansas, and one daughter, Mrs. Frank Van Middlesworth of Fullerton, several grandchildren and her granddaughter Francis McGinnis, who will hereafter make her home with her grandfather, E.H. Main at Topeka.
The funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the home, Mrs. Bobcock of the Christian church preaching a very beautiful sermon, one characteristic and in harmony with the life of the beloved and venerable old lady.
The sincere sympathy of the entire community goes out to the bereaved family in their loss of mother and grandmother. Interment in Ellendale Cemetery. | Brooks, Mary Veline (I4809)
