THE OLDEST RESIDENT DEAD
Mrs. Phoebe Decker Passes Away in Her 99th Year

Mrs. Cornelius Decker, conceded to be the oldest resident of the Pioneer City, died yesterday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Sarah Griggs at the corner of Park Street and Tenth Avenue.

Mrs. Decker was born in New York state in 1802, which made her age at the time of her death 98 years. With her husband, who died on June 10, 1856 aged 56 years, Mrs. Decker came to Carbondale in 1829 and had lived in Carbondale ever since. Their mode of travel from New York city was by way of the old Delaware and Hudson canal, and the couple enjoyed the distrinction of making the trop on the first boat that ever traversed this route.

Mr. Decker was by trade a sawyer and he, during his reidence of 37 years in Carbondale, followed this manner of obtaining a livelihood. Mr. and Mrs. Decker were the parents of 14 children, five of whom survive, as follows: Mrs. Sarah F. Griggs, of Carbondale; John and Earnest Decker, of Scranton; Hiram Decker, of Canastota, NY and Benjamin Decker, of this city. Besides these, Mrs. Decker leaves 17 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. One son was given to the cause of the union, Lewis Decker, he dying on the battlefield in the Civil War.

The deceased lady was remarkably well preserved up to within a few days of her demise, both mentally and physically, aside from a slight deafness. She retained consciousness almost to the last. Her death was caused by heart trouble, from which she had suffered for a long time, and which her advanced age rendered it hard to alleviate.

She was a member of this First Methodist church in this city, having become allied with it many years ago. She was a true Christian woman and her friends in this city were numerous, who will be pained to hear of a death which, though not unexpected, will bring sorrow to many hears. The funeral will be held at the house of Mrs. Griggs, Park Avenue and Tenth Avenue, on Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock. The Rev. A.F. Chaffee will preach the funeral sermon, and the interment will take place at Maplewood cemetery.
