201 Aged 81 yrs., 5 mos & 4 ds Rogers, Lebbeus (I7710)

202 Aged 82 Yr. 9 Mo.

Silas' parents are Zachariah and Polly "Mary" (Acton) Nowlin. Silas was married twice: First to Elenor Cooper Blasdel on 03 Jun 1835, from which marriage 7 children were born. Then to Martha Jane Hargitt on 24 Sep 1849, from which marriage 9 children were born.

Silas worked by the month at flatboating for some years and in this way made his start in the business world. He would build a barge from lumber he cut, then fill it with wheat he grew, then float the barge down the river to New Orleans where he would sell both the grain and the lumber; then he would walk back to IN. It was on one of his return trips that his son Jonathan Blasdel was born. In 1835 he bought 140 acres of land and the following year he acquired 80 more. Eventually, he owned about 800 acres in Dearborn County, IN, besides a considerable tract in IL. He continued his river traffic until 1849, then devoted his time and attention to farming and stock raising. Silas and Elenor had seven children, four of whom were living in 1885. At the marriage of each of his children, he gave them some farm land in IN, OH, IL and MO. He lost a lot of money by going on notes for friends and he asked each of his children to refuse to sign a note for anyone.
Silas Emerson Nowlin is buried in the Cambridge (a/k/a Pella) Cemetery, near Guliford, Dearborn County, IN.
Discrepancy: His tombstone indicates that he died on 22 Mar 1891 at the age of 82 years and 9 months which would mean that his date of birth was 22 Jun 1808. His obituary indicates that he died on 26 Mar 1891. The 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880 US Census records strongly suggest that he was born in 1809 rather than 1808. Family tradition suggests that he was born in 1809.

212 Alten F. "Al" Grandt passed away on February 24, 2014 at the age of 95. He was born September 21, 1918 near St. Peter, Illinois as the 4th of Herman and Alvina Grandt's 6 children. He married Ruth Brauer on June 25, 1943. She died on May 2, 2003 following nearly 60 years of happily married life.

He was raised on his parents' St Peter farm, attended St. Peter Lutheran Grade School, confirmed at St. Peter Lutheran Church in 1932, and graduated from Farina High School in 1936. He attended Illinois State Normal University from 1938-41 until drafted by the army in July of 1941. After completing flight instruction in December of 1942 and receiving his officer commission and wings, he served as an instructor pilot with the Army Air Corp until discharged in December 1945.

Following World War II, he obtained his B.S. in Agriculture (1946) and his M.S. in Agronomy (1947) from the University of Illinois. He then conducted a 5 year research program with the University of Illinois Agricultural Experiment Station that led to publication of Experiment Station Bulletin 628, "Reclaiming Illinois Strip Coal Land With Legumes and Grasses." Widely regarded as a groundbreaking publication in the reclamation industry, this study launched his career in land reclamation.

He joined Midland Electric Coal Corporation in 1952 and he and Ruth moved to their permanent home located on reclaimed strip mined land approximately 2 miles south of Douglas, Illinois. He held various land management positions with Midland Electric and Peabody Coal Corporation for the next 30 years until retiring from Peabody as Director of Reclamation - Corporate in 1982. He published approximately 40 papers on reclamation and use of mined lands, and was the recipient of several national awards, including the American Society for Surface Mining and Reclamation 1985 Outstanding Reclamationist, their 1996 Lifetime Award, and 2002 Pioneer in Reclamation Award.

Following retirement from Peabody, he continued to farm his reclaimed strip mine acreage, including the last several years with his son, Terry.

His many community and church activities included the Yates City School Board, 4H club leader, and Knox County Farm Extension. A member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Brimfield, Illinois since 1952, he taught Sunday School for many years, and held every church office except treasurer.

He and Ruth are succeeded by 3 children, 8 grandchildren, and 9 great grandchildren: son Alten F. Grandt, Jr. (Skip) and Barbara nee Rieker in West Lafayette, Indiana; son Terry Grandt and Susan nee Rigg from rural Yates City; and daughter Kathy nee Grandt and husband Bill Schwartz in Grayslake, Illinois.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 1, 2014 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Brimfield, with Rev. Michael Liese officiating. Visitation will be held at the church from 5-7 p.m. on Friday evening and one hour prior to the funeral service on Saturday morning. Burial, with military honors, will be at St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery in rural Brimfield. Oaks-Hines Funeral Home in Elmwood is in charge of arrangements.

C. E. PEABODY.

Peabody, the implement man, is located at 216 South Seventh street, where he carries a complete line of creamery supplies, farm implements, light and heavy harness. The best makes only are handled, such as the De Laval cream separators, the Geiser Manufacturing Co.'s threshing machines, the La Crosse Implement Co.'s farm implements, wagons and buggies, the Loye Saddlery Co.'s harness.
Mr. Peabody always carries the very best line that he can find, and they have to be good to come up to the Peabody standard. He just recently sold two of the largest De Laval cream separators in the county, one to Dr. Camp and the other to J. M. Elder.
Mr. Peabody has been a resident of this city for twenty-eight years. He was in the grocery and meat business for a great many years, and has been for twenty-four years located in the same business block.
Mr. Peabody entered into the farm implement business in 1902. And in the eight years he has been in this business he has made a success, and this has been by the fair treatment and business policy, and the knowledge of the people who traded with him, that when they bought of C. E. Peabody that they were getting the best on the market and that is the Peabody standard. (Special Publication, 1910, p. 29, Brainerd Tribune, A. J. Halsted, Editor and Publisher)

CHARLES E. PEABODY
DIED THIS MORNING
_____

Resident of Brainerd Over Forty
Years Passed Away After a
Long Illness
_____

LEAVES WIFE AND DAUGHTER
_____

Was Identified With the Active Busi-
ness Life of Brainerd in Many
Lines

Charles E. Peabody, a resident of Brainerd for over forty years, passed away at 1:30 o'clock Monday morning, after a long illness.
Mr. Peabody was born at Beaver Dam, Wisconsin, June 22nd, 1856. He was married to Miss Viola Baker in 1879 at Janesville, Minnesota. Mrs. Peabody was a sister of the late Howard Baker, of Brainerd.
The Peabody's came to Brainerd in 1882, where he was first associated with Fred Bradbury in a grocery store where the Lyceum theatre now stands. Later Mr. Peabody went into partnership with Mr. Baker in the bakery and meat business, known as Peabody & Baker.
Twenty-four years ago Mr. Peabody started the implement business which bore his name until three years ago, when he sold it to Hagberg Brothers. Since that time he has lived retired.
Mr. Peabody is survived by his wife and one daughter, Mrs. William Spencer of this city, a brother, F. C. Peabody, residing at Merrifield and a sister, Mrs. A. L. Price, living at Janesville, Minn.
He was a member of the local Elks, in which organization he has always been very active. He also held membership in the Woodmen and the Workmen lodges.
In the Elks lodge Mr. Peabody served as trustee and also for many years on the sick and relief committee. He was recently elected a member of the new building committee. He took a deep interest in all his committee work and did much for the up building of the lodge. It was only when illness made him take to his bed that he had to cease his attendance. Mr. Peabody joined the Elks December 20, 1902, about four months after the lodge was organized.
He was of a kindly nature and in an unobtrusive way did many deeds of charity and helpfulness. He had a wide acquaintance in the city and especially in the country, where on account of previous business connections, he has many dealings with farmers.
The date of the funeral has not yet been set. Mrs. Peabody has expressed a wish that Elks will act and has already asked that among those named be C. D. Johnson, Fred Allison and Con O'Brien, life-long friends of the deceased. (Brainerd Daily Dispatch, 11 August 1924, p. 7, c. 1)

Curtiss L. Holt, Sandersville
Emory College, Oxford, Ga., January 27 -(Special)- Curtiss L. Holt, 19 years of age, an Emory student, and son of Mr. and Mrs. L.B. Holt, of Sandersville, died here today after an illness of several days with pneumonia. He is survived by his parents, one sister, Miss Ollie Belle Holt, and an older brother, Ben W. Holt. His mother and sister were at his bedside when he passed away. He was a prominent member of the junior class and a popular member of the Emory Chapter of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. He was active in every phase of college life and was one of the most popular members of the student body.

The Sandersville Georgian, 31 Jan 1912:
CURTIS HOLT DIED AT EMORY COLLEGE
POPULAR YOUNG MAN OF SANDERSVILLE SUCCUMBS TO ATTACK OF PNEUMONIA
It become the sad duty of the writer to chronicle the death of one of Sandersville's most popular young men, Mr. Curtis L. Holt, second son of Mr. and Mrs. L.B. Holt of this city, which sad event occurred last Saturday at Oxford, Ga., after an illness of four days of pneumonia, aged nineteen years. As soon as the disease developed, his parents were notified and they left at once for Oxford where he was a student at Emory College. It was hoped that the vigor of youth would enable him to withstand the attack, but the inroads upon his physical condition were rapid, and on Saturday the sad news was flashed over the wire that his life on this earth had come to an end. the news cast a pall of gloom over the entire city, as Curtis was a boy who was esteemed by all who knew him for his many qualities, his friendly disposition, and his courtesy and consideration towards everybody. It was his custom whenever he came home from school to make the rounds of the business houses and shake hands with his friends, and this thoughtfulness on his part made everybody feel that in his death they had lost a personal friend, and it can be truly said that there was never a death of a young man in this community which brought forth so many expressions of sorrow and regret.
the remains arrived on the night passenger train of the Central railroad early Sunday morning and a special train over the Sandersville railroad met it at Tennille and conveyed the funeral party to Sandersville. The funeral services were conducted at the residence of his parents Sunday afternoon at two o'clock and from there the body was conveyed to the city cemetery where the burial took place. the floral offerings of sympathizing friends were beautiful, and in this feeble manner gave expression of the deep sympathy for the bereaved family in their grief and sorrow.
