Gladys Sneeden McIver, age 96, passed away peacefully on June 8, 2018
She was born in Wilmington, NC March 17, 1922 the daughter of the late Eula Owen Sneeden and John Robert Sneeden. She met the late LaMar Whiteford McIver, Sr. through his brother whose family lived nearby when they were growing up and were married in 1943 in Wilmington, NC.
Gladys graduated from New Hanover High School in 1939. She received scholarships to Peace College and NC State College, during WWII, where she earned a mechanical engineering degree. Gladys used her knowledge to design a hook to lift cargo off of ships at the Wilmington Shipyard. She also worked for a time at Boeing Aircraft in Washington State. While with Boeing, she helped design a tooling manual and flew in the very first B-17 aircraft. After marrying LaMar, she was employed as a teller at two local banks, but eventually joined him at the LaMar McIver Insurance Agency where she remained until retirement in the late 1990’s.
Gladys served on numerous community boards, but her first love was serving her church, St. Andrews-Covenant Presbyterian Church (SACPC), where she was a Charter Member. She was awarded the coveted Presbyterian Church Honorary Life Member and most recently named Elder Emerita for her lifelong dedication and service to the SACPC congregation as well as the entire Wilmington community. She enjoyed involvement in the UDC, Stamp Defiance Chapter oDAR, Cape Fear Garden Club, her Sunday school class, Circle, and the visitation committee. She had a passion of putting others ahead of herself and was one of the most unselfish people you would ever know. Gladys, who never met a stranger, served as a positive role model, an inspiration, and generously shared her love and compassion with everyone she met.
Gladys was preceded in death by her son, LaMar W. McIver, Jr and is survived by her daughter, Lynda McIver (Joe) Whitted; sons, Duncan McNair McIver, Robert Sneeden (Lynn) McIver; granddaughters, Anne Emerson Whitted, Olivia Holt McIver, Samantha Elena McIver; sister, Mildred S. McIver; daughter-in-law, Lisa C. McIver; grandsons, Davis (Lissa) McIver, Andrew (Lindsey) McIver; and three great grandchildren.
A service to celebrate the life of Gladys will be held at 2 PM, June 11, 2018 at St. Andrews-Covenant Presbyterian Church, 1416 Market St, Wilmington, NC by Reverend Robert Lapp and Reverend Derek Macleod. Interment will follow at Oakdale Cemetery. Visitation will be held June 10, 2018 from 3 to 5 pm at the home of Lynda and Joseph Whitted, 2208 Waverly Drive.
The family would like to express their sincere gratitude for the care and compassion given by Dr Mary Rudyk over the past 30 years, her PA’s, and Dr. Ellis Tinsley as well as the NHRMC caring nurses, and nurse aides. Her time at the Commons was memorable and sincere appreciation goes to the wonderful staff who work tirelessly caring for the residents. We are truly grateful for the love and compassion extended to us by our family and friends over the years especially during the past three weeks. | Sneeden, Gladys Almon (I8042)
