Whitney - Dorothy, the three year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Whitney in this village, met with a terrible fatality Thursday last. The child was supposed to have been asleep in the house and members of the family were in the yard when they heard the child screaming and a young brother went to her rescue. He found the child enveloped to flames and her clothing was nearly burned off. He succeeded to patting out the flames, but not until the child was terribly burned on the body, head and face. Kind neighbors came to the rescue and cared for the child until t he doctor and its mother, who was away arrived. Everything was done for little one but it was evident that it had but one chance in a thousand to live and it was thought best to take it to the hospital in Rochester where it would have the best of care. Mr. and Mrs. Whitney made all arrangements to go to Rochester Saturday afternoon and were at the depot with the child when it expired. It is thought that upon awakening, the child went to the kitchen where she found matches and in playing with them she set her clothing on fire. Mr. and Mrs. Whitney will have the sympathy of the community as they lost another child a few years ago in a similar manner. The funeral was held from the house Monday last. | Whitney, Dorothy Maude (I8408)
